Summary
Around 50 years ago, the first open-top Porsche 911 was created as a prototype based on the 901. This car hardly appears in the literature, as the one-off was not a success and Porsche developed the Targa instead, which was presented in 1965. This article covers the history of the open-top Porsche variants from the very beginning and all models are shown in detail in the photo section. The report is rounded off with driving impressions and an extensive portrait of the 901 Cabrio one-off, along with two sales brochures from the time.
This article contains the following chapters
- Phantom without a trace in the factory archive
- Upheaval and cost pressure at Porsche
- Unpopular 356 Cabriolet?
- Conceptual abandonment of the open 901 version
- Reaction to the convertible boom in the USA
- The first 901 convertible in 1964

Preview (beginning of the article)
The driver's door is dented. The engine cover and rear panel too. Empty caves yawn where fog lights once shone. One front wheel is missing its hub cap, the passenger's sun visor. The emblem on the hood has lost some of its enamel and all of its former glory. This Porsche doesn't even have a soft top - because there is no soft top linkage to hold it in place. So what? Myron doesn't care about that. What matters to him is that minor injuries don't count here - the kind that happen when a shopping cart rolls into a collision in the Walgreen's parking lot. But what counts most for the American with Greek roots is that his car left the Porsche factory's test department in exactly this condition (apart from wearing parts). That was in 1965, or thereabouts.
