Although the Peugeot 504 was presented in 1968, there was hardly anything revolutionary about it and it was not primarily suitable for students. On the contrary. With the 504, the French had presented a conventional, modern, but above all very robust car, which was to become one of the most successful models of the Peugeot brand. For the 1971 model year, Peugeot added almost 200 cubic centimeters of displacement to the 504. This made it a far more attractive proposition in the competitive field of two-liter saloons - at least in part. While the injection engine benefited from more temperament with the same fuel consumption, the carburetor engine was the exact opposite. The 504 Coupé from Peugeot was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring of 1969 and only underwent slight visual changes during its fourteen-year production period. It only came to an end in 1984, after around 26,000 units. Only the convertible version, of which around 8,000 were built, is even rarer than the coupé. For many enthusiasts, the two Pininfarina-designed sports cars are among the most beautiful Peugeots in the company's entire history. The V6 engine, which was installed in the top versions, made the Coupé and Cabriolet a true GT, as this report with many photos shows.
When prices started to rise and cars in the upper mid-range were difficult to sell, Peugeot went all out and created a car with 504 looks and 404 technology, the 504 L. The mix of ingredients was successful and the prices were attractive enough to make the 504 L a bestseller, according to Heinz Kranz from the magazine 'hobby'. Between 1969 and 1983, Peugeot built the 504 Cabriolet, equipped with four and six-cylinder engines.
