Frazer Nash was an up-and-coming automobile company that made quite an impression in the 1920s and 1930s - not least because almost no other brand brought so many different models onto the market and was able to impress customers with a wide variety of technical delicacies. Both on the road and on the racetrack, the lightweight sports cars could hardly be put in their place. This report looks back at the 35-year history of a small sports car company whose fame still resonates today, illustrated with many historical images and sales literature from the time.
The American Austin and the American Bantam tried to make compact cars appealing to Americans in the 1930s. As close relatives of the Austin Seven, they carried English genes, but did not catch on in America. In the 1950s, Nash once again tried to position small cars as second cars with the Metropolitan, and with considerable success, not least thanks to the help of Austin. This report briefly introduces the history of the three cars and shows them in several variants in many pictures.
Between 1935 and 1939, the Aldington-Frazer-Nash company imported around 700 BMW vehicles, around 70 of which were chassis. The British were enthusiastic about the 315 to 335 models, but the Second World War put an end to the fruitful cooperation for both sides.
Today, the addition of replica has something disreputable about it, especially when it comes to classic cars. In 1932 it was quite different, promising entry into a world of motorsport as a more or less exact copy of a winner - like the Frazer Nash with chain drive. It was a quaint bird even then, but offered tangible advantages in races and long-distance driving.
At the end of the 1940s, Donald Healey and George Mason, the head of the American car manufacturer Nash, decided to build a sports car together. The Americans supplied the technical components and Healey took care of the rest, creating the Nash-Healey with a six-cylinder engine and an aluminum body built in England. This was soon replaced by a Pininfarina body, which was available as a convertible and coupé. By 1954, 507 cars had been built. This report tells the story of the only American sports car at the time, illustrated with current and historical images.
In 1953, the "MoMa" selected ten cars and invited the public to a "non-commercial car exhibition" in New York, which paid homage to the vehicle design of the time. Curator Arthur Dexler presented American, Italian, French, English and German automobiles from the brands Porsche, Aston Martin, Simca, Siata, Lancia, Cunningham, Nash-Healey, Ford, Studebaker and MG, which certainly sparked discussions about the quality and future orientation of car body designs. This report describes the circumstances of the exhibition at that time and shows all ten vehicles presented in over 100 historical and current pictures, supplemented with many vehicle brochures and the original exhibition catalog from 1953.
The Nash brand disappeared from the car market before 1957, although the company was one of the most innovative vehicle manufacturers in the USA. With the Nash Rambler, a comparatively compact everyday car was introduced in 1950, which, as a four-door model with a Pinin-Farina design, was able to convince even American skeptics from 1954. This report focuses on the four-door Nash Rambler Custom variant with Hydramatic and shows it together with its fellow models in historical and current pictures.
