The Mitsubishi Celeste coupé is probably less common on our roads than many a Ferrari or Maserati sports car. The practical two-door hatchback with rear-wheel drive was one of the brand's first cars to officially make it to Europe and was built for five years. However, a mixture of innovative and traditional technology and low prices were not enough to really compete with the coupé top dogs from Volkswagen and Opel. This driving report focuses on an early Mitsubishi Celeste 1600 ST, tells the story of the model and shows it in historical and current pictures as well as in the sales literature of the time.
Mitsubishi built the Sapporo coupé from 1976 to 1984 and marketed it under various names around the world. From 1978, the elegant coupé also came to Europe, where it had to compete against the Opel Manta, Ford Capri and VW Scirocco, among others, and did not do badly at all thanks to its contemporary technology and good quality. This report portrays a Mitsubishi Sapporo 2000 GS/R from 1979 and describes the history and construction of the now very rare Japanese car, supplemented by historical photographs, brochures and a sound sample.
A turbocharger makes the Mitsubishi Lancer so powerful that one wonders whether it is not too much for the rather staid sedan. The chassis and gearbox couldn't quite keep up with the 170 hp, as this test report from 1981 shows.
There may be other opulently equipped vehicles. But hardly any other is so uncompromisingly designed for comfort. Not to mention the exclusivity of a Mitsubishi Debonair: we are only aware of this one example registered in Germany, in which we were chauffeured through Berlin by the owner on a sunny fall day.
If aerodynamics is for people who can't build engines, then lightweight construction is for engineers who can't design chassis. In the early nineties, the Mitsubishi 3000 GT weighed more than a mid-size sedan, but cornered like a Mini. Despite this, the nimble little chubby car never really managed to gain a foothold in Europe. For this article, we drove one of the few 3000 GTs that came to Switzerland and tell the story of the technology carrier and its twin brother, the Dodge Stealth. Of course, we also recorded the sound of the V6.
