Lloyd LP 600 - a real little car
With front-wheel drive, a four-stroke engine and a pleasing four-seater body, the Lloyd LP 600 was a popular car that was built almost 80,000 times. There were good reasons for this. This text was published in 1979 as part of the "Youngtimer Collection". The Lloyd is definitely no longer a youngtimer today, but it is certainly an interesting car, as this article with numerous historical pictures and a sales brochure from back then shows.
In 1958, Pietro Frua, chief designer at Ghia-Aigle in Turin, gave the Alexander TS chassis of Bremer Lloyd an elegant body. Nevertheless, the streamlined coupé was a failure. The driving performance was not in keeping with the sporty shape. Only 49 examples left the factory, and only a few survived. This article tells the short history of the pretty coupé and is illustrated with archive photos and the press kit of the time.
An economical vehicle with sporting ambitions is how 'hobby' tester Kranz describes the compact Lloyd Alexander TS. Impressed by the car's racing success in the 12-hour race at the Hockenheimring, he points out the differences between the production car and the racing car and is obviously impressed by the result of the civilization. In the summer of 1959, the Lloyd company unveiled its new small car, the Lloyd 900, later called the Arabella. The 'hobby' test driver Gebhardt summarized just how many innovations the engineers had come up with in his first driving report. His enthusiasm is easy to read: "The new star of Lloyd is full of surprises inside and out! Are we at the beginning of a new era of 'big small cars'?"
