The Lincoln Continental, built from 1961 to 1970, was remarkable in several respects: it impressed with its simple, balanced lines and was also offered as a four-door convertible. Although this did not achieve high sales figures, it nevertheless enjoyed a loyal circle of enthusiasts and still does today. This report goes into the history and peculiarities of the Lincoln Continental and shows it in many historical illustrations as well as in the original 24-page brochure.
For decades, three brands competed for the favor of the top ten thousand in the USA: Cadillac, Imperial and Lincoln. However, it was the vehicles of the Ford subsidiary Lincoln/Mercury that were used several times as the basis for the presidential limousines, in particular the Continental models. In 1939, 1950, 1961, 1968 and 1972, the respective American presidents took possession of special versions of the Lincoln. This article describes the advantages of the various presidential limousines and shows them in many historical photographs, supplemented by pictures of the production version.
In 1960, Lincoln presented a new Continental, restrained in styling, self-supporting and - surprise - more compact than its predecessor. President Kennedy obviously liked the new model and had a special presidential version built by Hess & Eisenhardt, which instantly became internationally famous following the assassination attempt in 1963. No wonder copies of the 6.4-meter-long convertible were then produced. This report starts with the '61 Lincoln Continental, lists the President's special requests and shows a 1:1 copy of the convertible as well as the original 1961 version in many pictures.
Upholstery as soft as marshmallows and a hood as wide as the land. The Continental Mark IV still embodied the traditional form of luxury, where comfort was paramount. We let a 1972 example take us back to the seventies and inspire us to write this article.
