In collaboration with the Ferrari Owners Club GB, Silverstone Auctions organized an auction on 4 June 2022 at the Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire (UK), which revolved entirely around the rearing little horse.
After many automobilia, 22 Ferrari sports cars, including three Dino 246 GT/GTS, went under the hammer at 14:00 UK time. The public auction lasted around two hours and also attracted many bidders via the Internet.
Relatively young offer
As the average age of just over 30 years indicated, there was a complete absence of cars built before 1970. In the absence of 250 GT or 275 GTB, but Daytona or 365 GTC/4 were also missing, three Berlinetta Boxers and three Dino were responsible for representing the super classics, supplemented by two 308s and two 328s.
Half of the cars were still youngtimers or younger. The youngest car was one of 799 F12TdFs built in silver metallic and with left-hand drive from 2017, which went to a Swiss internet bidder for EUR 787,060 or CHF 814,200.
Attention right-hand drive
14 (64%) of the Ferrari/Dino sports cars were right-hand drive. This naturally made these cars more interesting for British (or Japanese) bidders, but less exciting for continental Europeans.
The left-hand drive cars performed slightly better, averaging 89% of the median estimate, while the same figure was not quite 86% for the right-hand drive cars.
Left-hand drive Dino 246 GTS generated a lot of interest
A left-hand drive Dino 246 GTS in black with a red interior was estimated at £400,000 to £500,000. Delivered with wide wheel arches, the corresponding rims and the popular Daytona seats, the appetizingly presented Dino caused a lengthy bidding battle that began at £ 300,000 and only ended at £ 450,000.
Including surcharge and converted, this meant the proud selling price of EUR 587,250 or CHF 607,500.
The other two right-hand drive Dino also did well, the yellow 246 GT from 1973 was sold for EUR 300,150 or CHF 310,500, while the blue 246 GTS from the same year found a new garage for EUR 432,332 or CHF 447,240.
Valuable Testarossa
A Testarossa from 1991, which had covered just 10,500 miles to date (with right-hand drive), was also well valued.
Bidding started at £65,000 and the coupé was only knocked down at £115,000, resulting in a sale price of EUR 150,075 or CHF 159,250.
308 and BB less in demand
Three Berlinetta Boxter and four 308/328 versions came under the hammer, almost all of them right-hand drive.
Only one of the two 365 GT4/BBs from 1974 was sold, and this for a comparatively reasonable EUR 234,900 or CHF 243,000, while the other stopped at £ 152,000. A disappointing £ 200,000 was offered for the left-hand drive 512 BBi from 1982, which was also not sold.
The 308 GTB from 1976 with white plastic bodywork also failed to reach the limit; no one wanted to bid more than £102,000.
For an almost new 328 GTS from 1989 with only 2760 miles on the clock, £ 77,000 was offered, which was enough to sell at EUR 100,485 or CHF 103,950.
A Ferrari California from 2011 proved to be surprisingly popular, selling well above its estimate for EUR 111,577 or CHF 115,424. This was some consolation for the fact that some of the newer cars were also left standing.
In any case, the Silverstone Auctions auctioneer was satisfied with the sales rate of 68% and the turnover of £ 2.83 million (EUR 3.3 million, CHF 3.4 million) for 15 vehicles sold, after all £ 188,655 was realized per car.
