Perhaps the most famous car ever to have won the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the Porsche 917, an endurance racing icon. If the victories in 1970 and 1971 were not enough to achieve icon status, Steve McQueen went one better with the film "Le Mans". The Porsche 917 is considered the "ultimate racing car of the 20th century". Its creation in 1968 can be traced back to the initiative of Ferdinand Piëch, who was responsible for research and development, including racing, as a young engineer at Porsche at the time. The racing sports car was developed under his direction by Hans Mezger. The first Porsche twelve-cylinder engine initially produced 542 hp on the test bench, and by mid-1969 it had reached 580 hp and 8400 rpm. The torque amounted to 51 mkg at 6600 rpm. The engine weighed just 240 kg and was coupled to a five-speed gearbox which, like the new lightweight tubular frame chassis, was derived from the Porsche 908. The chassis weighed just 48 kg, while the body of the prototype weighed 38 kg.
