Summary
It is rare for such a wide range of special vehicles to be auctioned. It is even rarer for such an auction to take place exclusively online. However, due to Covid-19 and as a result of Techno Classica 2020 being canceled, this is exactly what happened and from 3 to 11 June 2020, bidders around the world were able to bid on 191 vehicles, including 184 cars, five tractors and two boats. The Petitjean collection of unorthodox sports cars on offer in particular caused quite a stir. Of the estimated total value of EUR 23.7 million, EUR 18.9 million was realized. 173 vehicles or 91% of the offer found new owners. The highest bids averaged 80% of the median estimate, with swings of between 22% and 145% showing that not all cars were equally sought after. The most expensive car sold was a virtually new 2020 Porsche 935 'Martini' for EUR 1.32 million, followed by a Bugatti Type 57 and a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, proving that "online" does not mean cheap. This auction report analyzes the results and shows the vehicles in pictures.

Preview (beginning of the article)
The auction had actually been planned as a normal live auction at the Techno Classica in Essen in spring 2020. But then came Corona. And now new paths had to be taken. RM/Sotheby's changed its plans and offered 191 vehicles, including 184 cars, five tractors and two boats in an online-only format from June 3 to 11, 2020, so there was no traditional auctioneer with a hammer. The auction was now called "The European Sale featuring the Petitjean Collection" and the name already indicated that the majority of the cars came from the collection of Frenchman Marcel Petitjean. These are a good 90 vehicles that the racing driver, businessman and collector bought over several decades and never gave up. There were hardly any off-the-shelf items, but all the more exotic cars and rarities.
