Preview (beginning of the article)
For the first time, RM/Sotheby's held an auction at the Petersen Auto Museum in Los Angeles on December 8, 2018. The new auction is intended to be a counterpart to the New York auction held every other year. 68 vehicles, including some motorcycles and automobilia, went under the hammer, with the total value of the vehicles estimated at USD 47.5 million. In the end, USD 39.3 million including surcharge/commission was raised, although around a fifth of the vehicles could not be sold, so the auction can already be considered established. The highlight of the auction was certainly the final lot Ferrari 290 MM from 1956. Some of the most famous racing drivers of all time sat behind the wheel of this factory racing car with chassis number 0628, including Stirling Moss, Peter Collins, Alfonso de Portago, Phil Hill and Wolfgang Von Trips.
