RM/Sotheby's was in London for the ninth time, and some may remember the first auction in London, when part of Bernie Ecclestone's collection went under the hammer.
On September 6, 2015, Max Girardo and his team once again put together an interesting portfolio of cars at the Battersea Evolution Center in London, ranging from a small Bandini two-seater to a Bugatti EB 110 Super Sport.
The total estimated prices amounted to almost £ 25 million (Euro 34 million, CHF 37 million), a significant amount for 76 cars (including one engine). 30% were to be knocked down without a minimum bid.
This was obviously interesting enough to fill the large room almost to bursting point. And to eagerly await the first lots.
Too expensive?
After a few "no reserve" lots, which were all knocked down below the estimated price, the auction machine faltered a little. If the prices had been in euros or Swiss francs, some people would probably have continued bidding, but in British pounds sterling it was a lot of money after all.
And so more cars (with a reserve price) were left standing, i.e. those that could be sold.
At least until ... to the Ferves Ranger.
Highest price ever offered
In fact, the Ferves R anger , a miniature off-road car once owned by Philip Starck, reached a top bid of £26,000, against an estimate of £16,000 to £20,000. Lots of whimsical banter made this bidding war a delight. Want some examples? "There are hardly any vehicles like this left, presumably their owners have lost them in the woods" or "a vehicle that will take them anywhere they want to go, but with a smile on their lips" or "I feel we'll get to a million" (Max Girardo, as he went from £19,000 to £20,000).
Anyway, the 1964 Maserati Mistral 3.7 Spyder, once driven by Britain's Marilyn Monroe (Diana Dors), then followed suit and went for £470,000, with the following 2006 Porsche Carrera GT knocked down for £400,000 ("the buy of the day ...").
And at £17,000, the 1965 Fiat 500 beat the estimate just as easily as the Ferves, whereupon Max Girardo said that he should probably only sell Ferves and Fiat 500s ...
Ferrari sports cars with mixed results
18 Ferrari sports cars were auctioned in London, including the Dino 206 GT. On average, the bids reached around 83% of the median estimate, meaning that the Ferrari was actually on average for the entire auction.
Nevertheless, the result was not satisfactory for RM, as the highly prized Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider from 1973 did not find a new owner, nor did a Ferrari 365 GT 2+2 and a Ferrari 365 GTC.
And only the 308 GT4 from 1979, which received the highest bid at the level of the upper estimate, was able to overshoot.
However, the prices were by no means cheap, as a Ferrari 328 GTS from 1989, albeit in almost virgin condition, was knocked down for a whopping £ 170,000, which corresponded to a sales price of Euro 260,848 or CHF 283,696 before tax. This could well have been the most expensive 328 GTS of modern times.
The Ferrari F40 also achieved a high valuation with a sales price (incl. 12% bidder's commission) of Euro 1.16 million or CHF 1.26 million.
Women's bonus?
Did the women's bonus play a role in the MG PA/B Le Mans from 1934? After all, this was a works car that was once entrusted to a complete women's team for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which resulted in a good placing. Instead of the expected £95,000 to £120,000, the hammer fell at £135,000, which corresponded to a sale price (including 12% commission) of Euro 207,144 or CHF 225,288.
This car also came from Switzerland, as did an elegant Talbot-Lago T26 Record Drophead Coupé with Graber bodywork from 1947, which sold for Euro 199,472 or CHF 216,944 (incl. 12% bidder's premium), which seems rather cheap considering its rarity.
No affection for the new guard?
The Peugeot 205 T16 from 1984, built as a homologation base for Group B and only produced around 200 times, did not find a new buyer. The highest bid was £ 90,000, which was probably too low for the consignor.
The Porsche Carrera GT from 2006 and the Ferrari 575 from 2001 fared better, but still well below the estimated price.
The Alfa Romeo RZ and SZ pairing, on the other hand, sold well. Contrary to expectations - the RZ is much rarer as a roadster - the closed SZ variant achieved the higher price, with buyers paying Euro 92,064 or CHF 100,128 including a 12% surcharge, while the RZ roadster changed hands for Euro 65,212 or CHF 70,924.
The fast expensive ones
The most expensive purchases are not always due to the longest bidding battles. In the case of the Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France, it took barely more than three minutes for the bids to rise from two to four million. The sequel, however, was a little more difficult and was knocked down at 4.25 million.
And the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage - not even James Bond was able to enjoy the performance-enhanced version - found a new garage for Euro 1.07 million or CHF 1.17 million.
The Bugatti EB 110 Super Sport and the De Tomaso Mangusta also found a buyer.
23 million in 3.5 hours
At almost exactly 09:30 PM UK time, 3.5 hours later, Max Girardo swung his hammer for the last time on a 1985 Ferrari Testarossa (with a raised mirror) and recorded the highest bid of £ 97,500 (sale price incl. surcharge Euro 149,604, CHF 162,708). Then the London auction came to an end,
21 cars had not found favor with the public. Among them were a Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, whose highest bid reached £ 90,000, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1957, a Renault Model 45 Tourer from 1925, a Sunbeam 30 HP Four Passenger Tourer from 1927, but also the Mazda Cosmo Sport from 1970 or the Bizzarrini GT Strada 5300 from 1966. In no case could it have been said that the highest bids were an insult to the vendors, but they simply wanted something more. We'll see if they get it in the future.
Results in detail
The following list shows all vehicles offered (including the engine at the beginning) with estimated prices and highest bids in pounds sterling (column "Hgebot"). The sales prices in £, Euro and CHF include the 12% buyer's premium and are only filled in if the car was sold at the auction. The column "% Est" compares the hammer price with the average estimate. All information without guarantee.
