It was a very American auction that RM/Sotheby's organized in Hershey over two days on 11 and 12 October 2018. The majority of the 146 vehicles on offer (the 147th was withdrawn before the auction began) were of American origin and there were also many typical American automobiles on offer.
In total, the automobiles were valued at around USD 13.5 million. In the end, however, a total of USD 10.7 million was raised for the vehicles, although 89 percent of all vehicle lots were knocked down.
Pre-war dominance
On average, the vehicles were around 76 years old; not quite half of the cars came from the decades after the war, while the larger half were built in the pre-war period. The oldest car, an Oldsmobile Model R "Curved Dash" Rundabout from 1901 (lot 210) was estimated at USD 50,000 to 75,000, but was sold for much less, namely USD 40,700.
The most recent car was a 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560 SL (R107, lot 171), for which bids of between USD 20,000 and 25,000 were expected, but USD 17,600 was enough to buy it (including surcharge/commission).
However, this does not mean that the prices were generally well below expectations. Around a third of the lots were sold above the median estimate.
Valuable electric cars
Two electric cars were offered on 11/12 October 2018, both pulverized their respective estimates and were sold for around twice the expected price.
The Milburn Elctric Model 27 Brougham from 1917 (lot 197), which was in the catalog for USD 25,000 to 35,000, achieved a sales price of USD 63,250.
The 1912 Baker Electric Model W Runabout (lot 159), estimated at USD 85,000 to 100,000, was gilded at USD 192,500.
Steam cars, another alternative form of propulsion, had a much harder time of it. The three Stanleys were knocked down for 59 to 93 percent of their estimated value.
Surprise of the day - American Eagle
When the bidding battle for the 1911 American Eagle Touring (lot 376) came to an end, the highest bid was 338 percent of the median estimate.
In the end, the buyer paid USD 242,000 for the tourer, which had once been built as a one-off to test a new type of "tire" that featured aluminum sidewalls and spring-supported rubber treads. Was it the special history that spurred on the bidding war?
Expensive Playboy
Lot 157, a Playboy A48 Convertible from 1948, was also significantly more expensive than expected. USD 132,000 was ultimately due, with a moderate estimate of USD 55,000 to 75,000.
This was one of the 91 extremely compact cars built, which had a folding tin roof that was very advanced for the time.
45 brands
The American brands Buick (8 cars), Cadillac (17), Chevrolet (11), Chrysler (4), Ford (17) and Packard (16) dominated the auction, but in addition to these widely represented manufacturers, there were also some with their name on just one of the cars, e.g. Autobianchi, Continental, Delahaye, Everitt, Kaiser, Marmon, Monarch, Northern, Pontiac, Reo or Volvo.
The Volvo 1800E was the first car to go under the hammer on the very first day and it did very well: the buyer paid USD 38,500, which was significantly more than the estimated value (USD 25,000 to 30,000).
Packard and Cadillac
Three Packards and a Cadillac were the highest priced in the run-up to the auction.
A 1932 Packard Twin Six Individual Custom Convertible Sedan by Dietrich (lot 409) was expected to be the most expensive, with an estimate of USD 600,000 to 750,000. The bidders did not want to go that high, the bids dried up at USD 540,000 and the car remained unsold.

The 1930 Cadillac V16 Roadster with Fleetwood body (lot 397), which was valued at USD 400,000 to 450,000 (lot 397), fared better. The purchase price of USD 495,000 even exceeded the median estimate.
Two other Packards (lots 395 and 396) were knocked down at 84 and 82 percent of the median estimate, while a 1932 Marmon Sixteen Close-Coupled Sedan with body by LeBaron found its way into a new garage for USD 225,000, about a quarter below the median estimate.
European raisins
The Europeans were relatively thinly represented in Hershey, but there were still two Jaguar XK Coupés for sale, two Jaguar E-Types, a Triumph TR4A, two MGAs and an MG TD, as well as a 1911 Delahaye 43A Charabanc (lot 377) estimated at USD 100,000 to 150,000 with plenty of transport capacity, which, however, only attracted bids of up to USD 80,000 and was therefore not sold.
While the two XK coupés from Jaguar found new owners, the two E-Types were left standing. The 1972 Citroën SM went to a new owner for USD 46,750, a 1957 MGA for USD 30,800 and the 1960 Autobianchi Bianchina Trasformabile for just USD 23,100, about half the expected price. However, some of the estimates were certainly somewhat optimistic.
