What do coffee grinders, mandolins and vintage cars have to do with each other? Not much, actually. But RM brought these objects of desire together at an online auction. From February 16 to 23, 2022, bidders around the world were able to buy three coffee machines for just a few dollars, a tool set for the McLaren F1 (GBP 6000) for a little more money or a Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 for USD 35,200.
As always with the "Open Roads" auctions, the lots were scattered across half the world and were auctioned in different currencies.
44 percent of the cars sold
27 cars were on offer, with an average age of almost 53 years and a total estimated value of almost USD 3 million.
12 of the cars were sold, for an average of USD 105,316. The highest bids reached an average of 85 percent of the median estimate, and 92 percent of the cars sold.
Ferrari in front
Of the five Ferrari sports cars on offer, three were sold. No other brand was better represented.
At USD 179,213, a Ferrari 365 GTC/4 from 1972 changed hands for more money, but the price still seems reasonable for this rather rare car.
The Ferrari 250 GTE from 1962 was somewhat more expensive, selling for USD 284,270, just below expectations.
The third Ferrari sold was a 365 GT 2+2 from 1969, which fetched the equivalent of USD 160,474.
A 550 Maranello and a 330 GT 2+2 from 1967 went back to the consignors.
All Jaguars sold
Three Jaguars were offered, all of which were sold. The selection consisted of two E-Types and an XK 120 SE from 1953.
A Series 2 E-Type from 1969 was knocked down slightly above the estimate and sold for USD 45,100.
Two of the three Mercedes found new garages, while the 1966 Maserati Sebring remained at USD 151,685.
There was also no enthusiast willing to offer enough for the 1967 Alfa Romeo 1600 Duetto Spider. EUR 28,000 was not enough for a knockdown.
All-terrain duck with new owner
A four-wheel-drive duck from 1964 was up for sale from Germany. Only 694 of these all-wheel drive 2CVs with two engines were built between 1958 and 1971.
EUR 80,000 to 100,000 was estimated for the off-road duck, but EUR 83,600 was ultimately paid.
Too little interest in the Challenger and the Camaro
The 1970 Dodge Challenger RT/440 Six Pack convertible should have been the most expensive. It was estimated at USD 230,000 to 260,000, a value that certainly aroused curiosity.
However, nobody wanted to bid more than USD 225,000, so the car remained unsold.
It shared this fate with an open Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS 396 Convertible from 1969, which was looking for a new owner in bright yellow and with 60,000 miles on the clock. The asking price was between USD 100,000 and 130,000, but nobody wanted to offer more than USD 95,000.
Rally Kadett did not change hands
Opel Kadett Cs do not appear at international auctions very often. The car on offer was modeled on Walter Röhrl's rally car and bore the lettering of the Opel Euro dealer team. Prepared for rallies and with two Weber carburetors good for 180 hp, the car was expected to cost EUR 60,000 to 80,000.
However, the bids stopped at EUR 53,000, which was probably not enough for the consignor.

Exactly the same amount was also bid for a 1971 BMW 2002, which was also prepared for racing. It was not sold either.
Overall, the yield for RM was not exactly exhilarating, so it didn't help that the oldest car at the auction, at least virtually, a Benz Patent-Motorwagen from 1886, found a new owner as a replica after the auction.
