Moretti 1945-1990 - smart Fiat alternatives
Summary
There have been around 10,000 car brands and designers - most of which have disappeared. One of these vanished brands is Moretti, founded in 1945 and active until 1990. In the beginning, the Morettis were individual alternatives to Fiat models, later modifications of Fiat vehicles. The Moretti (Fiat) 128 and 124 fastback coupés were attractive, but the Moretti Midimaxi 127 leisure model was also a great success.

Giovanni Moretti had already turned his attention from motorcycles to automobiles in his small Turin workshop in 1927. In 1945, he founded the company Moretti, Fabbrica Automobili e Stabilimenti Carrozzerie S.a.S. It proved to be particularly inventive among the numerous small sports and enthusiast manufacturers in Italy. Despite the modest production size, in-house parts were used on a large scale. In 1946/47, the La Cita brand was launched, a well-designed small car with a 350 cc two-cylinder engine. The somewhat larger four-cylinder Moretti 600 followed in 1949/1950; increasingly more powerful and elegant models were derived from it - always with their own chassis and some with engines with two overhead camshafts.
