Summary
The Sachs-Kurve is an exceptional corner, as it can (nowadays) be taken faster on the outside than on the classic racing line. But that's not the only reason that makes it special. Preview (beginning of the article)
The small town of Hockenheim became nationally known thanks to the 12-kilometer Hockenheimring, which opened in 1932. The opening race on May 29, 1932 attracted 45,000 visitors. In 1938, the racetrack was converted for the first time into the so-called Kurpfalzring. During the economic crisis, unemployed people were used for the reconstruction as part of a job creation scheme. The second major reconstruction was triggered by the construction of the Bundesautobahn 6 highway, which completely cut through the ring (Stadtkurve), which at that time led right up to the houses. At that time, the race was still run counter-clockwise, i.e. against the usual racing direction. The start was on today's dragster track and the east bend was a left-hand bend back then. The track led right into the village of Hockenheim and past the cemetery.
