Summary
From March 12 to 22, 1959, the international automobile scene met in Geneva, where a record 300,000 visitors were counted. There was plenty to see, although not necessarily many new products. Instead, the latest technological trends and many improvements in design and mechanics were on display. Among the show stars were certainly the Fiat 1800, the Aston Martin DB4 and the Simca Fulgur and Scimitar concept cars. This Salon review shows many of the exhibited cars in over 130 historical photographs and explains the context and highlights of the exhibition.

Preview (beginning of the article)
With almost 300,000 visitors, the Geneva Motor Show in March 1959 broke all previous records. 885 exhibitors from 18 countries presented their products, demonstrating the increasing importance of the show at an international level. In general, individual motorization was on the rise. In Switzerland, 57,339 cars were sold in the previous year, bringing the total to 725,577 units. This means that in 1959 there was one motor vehicle for every seven inhabitants. It goes without saying that this increasing motorization meant that the roads, which for the most part still corresponded to the pre-war state, became narrow. As a result, the national road network was eagerly planned and in some places in the country it was already being built. As a negative consequence of individual traffic, the number of accidents also increased, with 1200 people falling victim to them in 1958 (for comparison: FRG 12,000, France 12,000, Italy 8000). Better and safer roads, but also improved cars, were therefore the order of the day.
