Summary
From March 7 to 17, 1985, the 55th Geneva Motor Show attracted over 500,000 visitors to the city on the Rhone. In addition to several world premieres, including the Lancia Y10, Volvo 780 Bertone and studies by Pininfarina and Bentley, the main focus of interest was on new approaches to exhaust gas purification, the omnipresent all-wheel drive and the body refiners. This report provides an insight into the environment and the surprises of the 1985 Geneva Motor Show and shows many of the exhibits in around 100 photos.

The 55th Geneva Motor Show, which opened its doors on March 7, 1985 and was the showcase for the automotive industry until March 17, 1985, took place at a difficult time. Vehicle technology was in a state of upheaval, trying to bridge the gap between economy and ecology. As a small market, Switzerland, with its own exhaust and noise regulations, posed particular challenges, while the increasingly widespread availability of unleaded petrol created the conditions for new exhaust gas purification technologies. Consumers, however, were unsettled, as the decline in sales in 1984 (-2.4%) showed, but were all the more interested in exploring the manufacturers' responses to the new regulations.
