Henri and Maurice Farman had grown up in Paris as the children of English parents and were enthusiastic about the en vogue sport of bicycle racing from an early age. At the end of the 1890s, they turned their attention to the automobile and raced Panhard models. The next stage was aviation: in 1907, Henri Farman converted a Voisin flying machine into the "Voisin-Farman I". Farman biplanes set flight records and played a leading role in the First World War. During the war, Henri, Maurice and Richard Farman set up factories in Boulogne-sur-Seine for the production of Lorraine-Dietrich aircraft engines. After the end of the war, the company switched to luxury cars. With its sophisticated lightweight construction and aerodynamics, the A6 launched in 1919 revealed influences from aircraft construction.
