The post-war Continental brand had nothing to do with the car and aircraft engine manufacturer Continental Motors Corporation, although it did make a foray into car manufacturing in 1933/34 with the Continental Automobile Company. But in 1939, Ford's luxury brand Lincoln introduced the top-of-the-range Continental model with a V12 engine. Its style, co-designed by Ford's son Edsel, was groundbreaking; nevertheless, the model series was discontinued in 1948. But in 1952, Ford decided to elevate Continental to an own brand and corporate division. Edsel's youngest son, William Clay Ford, was offered the job of managing it.
