Bonhams opened the Scottstale auction at the Westin kierland Resort on January 15, 2015. 84 cars were ready and waiting for new owners, 85% of which found them at an average selling price of USD 342,356 (Euro 292,411, CHF 300,599). On average, the lots sold (including surcharge/commissions) reached 99.99% of the median estimate. This would almost be a precision landing if there had not been considerable fluctuations.
Filipinetti-Ferrari 275 GTB/C almost reaches eight figures
The 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/C from Scuderia Filipinetti was announced as the highlight of the auction. And this multiple Le Mans participant certainly lived up to expectations with a sales price of USD 9.405 million (EUR 8.032 million, CHF 8.258 million).
A second Ferrari 275 GTB with an aluminum body and long nose from 1966 fared less well, as the reserve price could not be reached here. The Ferrari 250 GT Lusso from 1963 and the 250 GT Europa from 1955 fared similarly.
Coveted Berlinetta Boxer
Bidding was surprisingly high for two Ferrari 512 BBi built in 1982 and 1984.
While the younger one climbed to USD 324,500 (including commission), doubling its estimate, the older one sold for USD 357,500, which was 223% of the median estimate.
It will be interesting to see whether these higher valuations can also be observed at the other auctions.
Expectations too high?
Two of the three Ferrari Daytonas on offer did not live up to expectations.
While lot 136, a 365 GTB/4 Berlinetta from 1969, was sold at around the estimated price, the other two cars, a Coupé and a Spider, were left standing. Did the consignors simply have too high expectations? In fact, the 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider from 1972 would probably have been the most expensive to date if it could really have been sold for the estimated price of USD 3 to 3.3 million.
E-Types with mixed results
Six Jaguar E-Types were on offer. While the two Coupés did well with sales prices just above the estimate, the two Series 1 Roadsters did not sell, or sold well below the estimate, while the Series III V12 Roadster found a new owner 9% above the estimate.
The "no reserve" strategy went very badly for the consignor of the 1962 Jaguar E-Type Special. Instead of the expected USD 125,000 to 175,000, it fetched USD 57,200 (including surcharge).
New stars?
Three cars that are often unlucky at auctions were sold at prices well above expectations. An Aston Martin V8 Volante from 1978 fetched USD 155,100, a Maserati Bora 4.9 from 1978 changed hands for USD 132,000 and the Mercedes-Benz 300 S Coupé from 193 on offer was worth half a million USD to its new owner.
The "old" stars changed hands just below expectations, the 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing for USD 1.375 million, the two 300 SL Roadsters from 1957 and 1958 for USD 902,000 and USD 1.238 million.
No Toyota friends in the room?
Three Toyotas were on offer, two Land Cruiser FJ40 SUVs and an interesting Corona two-door from 1968.
They were all sold, but well below the estimated price. The Corona hardtop sedan changed hands for just USD 11,000, the off-road vehicles for USD 35,200 and 38,500.
Around 15% not sold
13 cars could not be sold; in addition to those already mentioned, there was also a Dino 246 GTS, a Jaguar XK 140 Roadster, a 1934 Packard Eight and, surprisingly, a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, which, with an estimated price of USD 850,000 to 950,000, was not very cheap.
