Summary
It was not the Maserati MC12 Corsa or the BMW 507 that caused the fiercest bidding war, but a Simplex 50 HP 5 Passenger Torpedo Tourer over 110 years old, which finally sold for almost CHF/EUR 4.5 million at the Bonhams auction in Scottsdale on January 27, 2023. A VW Karmann Ghia, two Aston Martin DB6s, a BMW Isetta and a Porsche 928 were also sold for a high price. This auction review analyzes the results and shows the cars in pictures.

Preview (beginning of the article)
The Scottsdale auctions traditionally kick off the new auction year. Bonhams brought 123 automobiles, a camping trailer and a Vespa team as well as some pedal cars under the hammer at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa on January 27, 2023 from 10 am. The vehicles were presented on a large stage and auctioned off by experienced auctioneers Maarten ten Holder and Rupert Banner. In total, the vehicles represented a value of around USD 35 million. 84 percent of the vehicle lots were sold, on average for USD 241,167 (CHF/EUR 221,874). On average, 88% of the estimated mean value was offered. 59 percent of the cars were offered without a reserve price. The total turnover for the vehicles amounted to USD 30.4 million (EUR/CHF 28 million).
