On August 18, 2017, Bonhams participated in the "Quail Lodge Auction" with 111 automobiles that were not lacking in appeal. In total, they represented a value of over USD 70 million (EUR 53 million, CHF 60 million).
73 percent of the vehicles were sold for a total of USD 44 million (EUR 37 million, CHF 42 million). On average, 91.5 percent of the median estimate was paid (incl. commission/surcharge).
The most expensive McLaren F1 in the world
Without an estimate, the specialists from Bonhams brought a McLaren F1 from 1995 under the hammer. The car had a milestone of just 9600 miles and was consigned by its first owner. It is believed to be the only road-legal F1 in the States.
The bidders were not to be outdone and drove the bids well over the ten million mark. In the end, the silver three-seater changed hands for USD 15.62 million (EUR 13.3 million, CHF 15 million). It will therefore go down in auction history as the most expensive McLaren F1.
Million euro value
Of course, the McLaren was not the only car to break the million barrier, which was to be expected with an average estimate of USD 652,000. Ferrari dominated the top-seller list.
A Ferrari 275 GTB from 1965 with a long front and aluminum body was sold for USD 3.08 million (EUR 2.62 million, CHF 2.96 million), another Ferrari 275 GTB/4 from 1967 sold for USD 2.519 million (EUR 2.15 million, CHF 2.42 million).
USD 2.041 million (EUR 1,738,074, CHF 1,961,765) was paid for a 2003 Ferrari Enzo, and USD 1.458 million (EUR 1,241,482, CHF 1,401,260) for a 1990 F40 with just 2,100 miles, which was well above the estimated value of USD 1 to 1.3 million.
Finally, a Ferrari 250 GT Boano from 1956 fetched USD 1.133 million (EUR 965,076, CHF 1,089,282).
Only two other brands were able to join the ranks of the millionaires, namely a 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America, which found a new owner for USD 1.265 million (EUR 1,077,512, CHF 1,216,188), and a 1964 Shelby Cobra 289, which found a new owner for USD 1.089 million (EUR 927,597, CHF 1,046,979).
The AC Ace Bristol at first hand
It was not considered one of the best sports cars in the world almost 60 years ago for nothing, the AC Ace Bristol. But if you get the chance to buy one of these open-top cars from a first-hand owner with a completely traceable history, then you should really plunder your bank account. One bidder did just that, paying USD 451,000 (EUR 384,156, CHF 433,597) for the 1959 car with a racing history, almost 40 percent more than the estimate.
With the coupé version of the Ace, known as the Aceca, another bidder came into the coveted cockpit at a significantly lower price, with USD 192,500 (EUR 163,969, CHF 185,072) being sufficient for the purchase.
Group B vehicles with mixed results
Bonhams had organized a real Group B festival for Quail Lodge. Six different vehicles in road and racing configuration were up for sale. And they finished with very different results.
While a 1986 Ford RS 200 Evolution sold for USD 550,000 (EUR 468,483, CHF 528,777), a 1985 Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 sold for USD 198,000 (EUR 168,654, CHF 190,359).
In contrast, a 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Stradale sold for a comparatively high USD 440,000 (EUR 374,787, CHF 423,022), which is at the upper end of what these cars have achieved to date.
Also proving valuable was a 1985 Audi Sport Quattro S1, for which USD 484,000 (EUR 412,265, CHF 465,324) was paid.
A Lancia Rally 037 Stradale from 1983 fetched USD 264,000 (EUR 224,872, CHF 253,813), another Ford RS 200 from 1986 USD 181,500 (EUR 154,599, CHF 174,496).
Famous cars without new owners
In addition to the success stories, there was also a considerable number of unsold super classics to report. For example, the 1963 Jaguar E-Type Lightweight from the Cunningham team did not sell, with no one willing to bid more than USD 8.2 million.
The 1956 Maserati 300S, once driven by Juan Manuel Fangio, fared similarly. Instead of the expected USD 6 to 7 million, only USD 5 million was offered.
The Maserati A6G/54 Gran Sport Spider with Frua bodywork from 1956 did not find a new owner either; the USD 2.35 million offered was not enough to win the bid (estimate USD 3.2 to 3.6 million).
And for the consignor of the 1980 Formula 1 Ferrari 312 T5, once driven by Jody Scheckter, the USD 2.4 million bid was not enough either.
The unsold cars also included a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider from 1972 (highest bid USD 2.15 million), a Ferrari 400 Superamerica Coupé Aerodinamico from 1963 (highest bid USD 3.0 million) and a Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France from 1958.
The 1964 Lotus 34 was also not worth the estimated USD 1.8 to 2.5 million to any bidder.
A BMW 3.0 CSL from 1972, a Dino 246 GT from 1972 and a Shelby 427 Cobra (highest bid USD 1.36 million), as well as a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1957 (highest bid USD 880,000) also failed to be knocked down.
Bidders were more cautious and selective, especially when it came to the cars that could be bought at several auctions around Pebble Beach.
Bargains
A beautiful Lotus Elite Series II Super 95 from 1962 proved once again that Colin Chapman's plastic sports cars have a hard time with today's collectors. Instead of the asking price of USD 90,000 to 125,000, the buyer only had to fork out USD 79,200 (EUR 67,461, CHF 76,143), i.e. 74% of the estimate.
Considering the restoration costs for this beautiful car, it was probably one of the biggest bargains at the auction.
A 1973 Chevrolet Corvette C3 was also sold well below the estimate, with the buyer paying just 46 percent of the estimated value.
And a 1986 Ferrari Testarossa in the coveted early single-mirror configuration also passed into new hands for just USD 117,700 (EUR 100,255, CHF 113,158), 59 percent below the estimated value.
A 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350H (Hertz), a 1976 Maserati Khamsin and a 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Roadster also sold for at least 25 percent less (including surcharge/commission) than the estimate.
A glance at the overall result shows that a number of highly valued cars that might easily have found a new owner two years ago were left standing. However, the limits were probably set quite high for these vehicles in particular, and especially during the Pebble Beach week, some bidders probably didn't want to put their money down on Friday and wait for the other auctions.
