Summary
Bonhams auctioned 135 selected classic cars, including a children's car and a boat, at the Rétromobile in Paris at the Grand Palais on February 8, 2018. Around a third were from the years before the Second World War, with the almost-forgotten Minerva brand standing out in particular with 11 vehicles. The pre-1940 cars in particular fetched good prices, while some super classics were disappointing. Many no-reserve lots ensured that the sales quota nevertheless amounted to 76 percent. This auction article shows all the cars and the atmosphere on site, analyzes the results and details all the hammer prices.

Preview (beginning of the article)
The auction of 133 full-size cars, a children's Bentley and a speedboat lasted seven hours at the Grand Palais in Paris on February 8, 2018. And because it was very wintry outside, it also got colder and colder inside the imposing building towards the evening. However, this did not prevent the bidders from fighting fierce battles for the most attractive lots; even with the last vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz 350 SLC, many interested parties took part in the bidding war and drove the hammer price to EUR 14,000, around 12 percent above the median estimate. However, not all vehicles sold so well. On average, the hammer fell at 82 percent of the median estimate, 76 percent of the lots sold and the rest went unsold. Total sales amounted to around EUR 15.1 million (CHF 17.4 million), which equated to EUR 146,709 (CHF 168,715) per vehicle.
