For the first time, the British auction house Bonhams organized an auction on the occasion of the Italian classic car fair "Auto e Moto d'Epoca" in Padua . On Saturday, October 28, 2017, 59 cars and a fairground car scooter went under the hammer.
However, the bidders did not get into the hoped-for buying frenzy, with over half of the vehicles on offer failing to reach the expected minimum bids. As a result, the total turnover leveled off at around EUR 3.12 million, whereas significantly more than twice that amount had been expected. The vehicles sold reached an average of 85% of the estimated value; there were significant downward swings, especially for low-priced lots without a reserve price.
The star was silver-plated
EUR 750,000 to 950,000 (CHF 860,000 to 1.1 million) was the estimate for the most valuable car at the auction, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1957, an early open-top model.
The silver sports car with US history had a low, but not completely traceable mileage. This did not deter the bidders, and in the end the SL ended up at EUR 897,000 (CHF 1,043,390) at Estimate level.
Red Maserati 3500 GT Vignale Spyder in demand
The red Maserati 3500 GT Vignale Spider could have been seen as the Italian answer to the silver 300 SL. The car was one of around 242 built in the 1990s and was restored and resprayed in 2003.
Estimated at EUR 600,000 to 700,000, the final price paid was EUR 638,250 (CHF 742,412), which was slightly below expectations.
Many spurned rarities from Italy's automotive history
Over half of the cars at Bonhams came from Italy! Alfa Romeo (8x), Fiat (8x) and Lancia (10x), plus three Ferraris and some exotic cars.
However, the country's own classics were not more popular with the bidders than the imported vehicles. For example, the Lancia Flaminia Sport 3C Coupé with Zagato bodywork from 1962 did not find a new owner; the expected price of EUR 400,000 to 500,000 proved to be too high.
Even rarer than the Flaminia were two other Italian exotics on offer. The De Tomaso Vallelunga from 1967, one of only 50 examples built, was not worth the estimated EUR 200,000 to 250,000 to any bidder.
And the even more affordable Osca 1600 GT Coupé from 1965 with Fissore bodywork, one of only 21 examples and from long-term ownership, also failed to find a new garage. Apparently the expectation of EUR 160,000 to 200,000 was too high here too.
Diverse Fiat derivatives
A whole series of special Fiat bodies came under the hammer in Padua, including a Fiat 750 Vignale Coupé from 1963, a Fiat 750 Vignale Spider from 1963, a Fiat 1100 TV Coupé with Pininfarina bodywork from 1955 and the Fiat-Abarth as a Monomille GT Coupé from 1963.
Only the Monomille was sold, for EUR 103,500 (CHF 120,391) at the Estimate level.
The Alfa Romeo vehicles fared somewhat better, five of the eight cars on offer were sold, but here too, for example, the 1300 GTA Junior from 1969 and the 1900 C Sprint from 1953 were left standing, as was the Giulia Sprint 1600 from 1962.
Inexpensive Lancia
Two Lancia youngtimers were offered together with two other lots without a reserve price. And in both cases, the risk was probably not worth it for the consignor.
Both the Delta 1600 HF from 1982 and the Thema 2.0 i.e. Turbo Berlina from 1990 only achieved just under a quarter of the estimate and were therefore sold for EUR 4025 (CHF 4681) each. The Delta in particular must have been a big disappointment.
The Honda Z600 from 1972 also sold well below expectations. The rare coupé in compact format fetched just EUR 10,925 (CHF 12,707), compared to an estimate of EUR 18,000 to 24,000.
Was it due to the very large number of vehicles on offer at the fair that sales at Bonhams were not really buzzing? In any case, those responsible must not have been entirely happy with the results and it will be interesting to see whether there will be another Bonhams auction in Padua next year.
