Initially, Auto Union was a racing brand; it did not officially exist as a passenger car brand until 1959. The name Auto Union was created in 1932 through the merger of the Saxon automobile companies DKW (Zschopauer Motorenwerke), Audi, Horch and the automobile division of Wanderer in order to strengthen the company during the global economic crisis. A Grand Prix racing car with a V16 mid-engine, which was soon realized under Ferdinand Porsche, was intended to serve Auto Union advertising and was later (like the Mercedes-Benz competition) sent on the road to international victory with the support of the National Socialist regime.
