Summary
There have been around 10,000 car brands and designers - most of which have disappeared. One brand that can be counted among them is Austin. Most recently, Austin merged with the Nuffield Group to form the well-known British Motor Corporation (BMC).

Austin was the most popular English car name. Herbert Austin acquired his first technical knowledge in his uncle's mechanical workshop in Australia. His engineering talent saw Austin rise to become the manager of the Wolseley sheep shearing factory. In his spare time, he designed a car, which was presented as the first Wolseley in 1896. Other advanced models followed, but it was not until 1905 that Austin created his own brand. The big breakthrough came with the Austin Seven, built from 1922, an inexpensive small car with all the features of larger models. It became a bestseller and was also produced under license in Germany, France and the USA.
