On October 20, 2013, Artcurial auctioned 77 vehicles in Paris for a total of 4.4 million euros or CHF 5.4 million. On average, each vehicle sold for 66,325 euros or CHF 82,243. 14% of the vehicles could not be sold and some of the prices deviated substantially from the estimates. Around 35% of the buyers are said to have been from outside France.
Maserati 3500 GTI Spider with new world record
The most expensive vehicle at the auction was a Maserati 3500 GTI Vignale Spider from 1962. With a sales price (incl. surcharge/commission) of EUR 553,527, it not only clearly surpassed the estimated price of EUR 300,000 to 400,000, but probably also all previous auction results for the dream car, which was only built 242 times and was also presented in beautifully restored condition.
The Maserati, which came from Swiss ownership, is said to have been bought by an English bidder, who therefore not only had to pay the bidder's premium of 17%, but also import duties for the non-EU car.
Lamborghini Miura for less than 500,000 euros
The Lamborghini Mi ura has attracted attention in recent years with prices in excess of one million euros. In Paris, Artcurial auctioned off a P400 model for 459,668 euros or CHF 569,988, which was pretty much in line with the median estimate.
A Lamborghini owner could get a better deal with an LM002, which was also on offer, for a price of 98,672 euros or CHF 122,353.
Ferrari sports cars with solid prices
Artcurial offered ten sports cars from Maranello, all of which were sold and all of which achieved prices just above the estimated value.
The most expensive was a Ferrari that doesn't actually have a Cavallino on the hood, the Dino 246 GT from 1972. The new owner paid 250,291 euros or CHF 310,361 for the yellow sports car.
You could get away cheaper with the 250 GTE from 1962, which cost Euro 209,378 or CHF 259,629. The Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 from 1965 also finished more or less in the estimated value range at EUR 186,515 or CHF 231,279. The cheapest way to become a Ferrari owner was with a Mondial T Cabriolet from 1994, with Euro 39,710 or CHF 49,240.
Car for Le Mans Classic for under 50,000 euros
In 1938, Vittorio Camerano entered a Simca 8 for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He finished eleventh overall, an impressive result. Many years later, Evelnye Heise built a replica of this car and took part in the Le Mans Classic with Jean-Pierre Jassaud in 2008.
Despite repairs, they reached the finish line and the car took part again in the following two events in the Sarthe. Now the Simca has found a new owner for Euro 45,726 or CHF 56,700, who was able to buy an FIA-approved racing car with Le Mans Classic history for little money but still well above the estimated value.
Unloved Italian designer gems?
A whole series of Italian rarities from Zagato and Bertone were on offer. While an Alfa Romeo SZ from 1991 found a new home for well over the estimate at EUR 45,726 or CHF 56,700, the hammer fell on the Alfa Romeo Junior 1600 GT Zagato just above the (relatively high) estimate at EUR 44,523 or CHF 55,209 (incl. surcharges).
The Lancia Appia GTE Zagato from 1959 (estimated price Euro 48,000 to 58,000) and the very rare Siata Amica Cabriolet by Bertone (estimated price Euro 40,000 to 60,000) did not find a new owner.
Popular wolves in sheep's clothing
BMW 2002 Turbo and Talbot Sunbeam Lotus cars have a long tradition at Artcurial. Once again, one of each was on offer. A silver-colored BMW 2002 Turbo from 1974 was sold for Euro 36,100 or CHF 44,764, while the black Talbot Sunbeam Lotus Series II from 1981 fetched Euro 19,253 or CHF 23,874.
Favorable and less favorable opportunities
Hudson limousines from the USA are rarely seen at auctions in Europe. Perhaps due to their low profile, the 1950 Hudson Commodore 8 limousine on offer could be bought for just 8,423 euros or CHF 10,445, half the estimated price.
A BMW 700 Coupé from 1963 was an even cheaper way to acquire a rarity. Just Euro 722 or CHF 895 was enough to win the hammer price including commission, not to mention 90% below the median estimate.
But there were also a number of vehicles (not yet mentioned) that sold well above the estimates, such as a 1955 Peugeot 203 Cabriolet, a 1990 Jaguar XJ 12 HE 5.3L Series III , a 1992 Austin Mini Cooper, a 1987 Mercedes Benz 560 SEL, a 1966 Alfa Romeo 1600 Spider Duetto, a 1974 Austin Princess 1300 Vanden Plas and a 1966 Matra Jet V Luxe.
