The Histo Cup took place at the Salzburgring from September 15 to 16, 2018. One of the series was the Touring Car Classics. Incidentally, this was already the 6th and penultimate round of the season. In this series, DTM/ITC touring car owners have had the opportunity to put their vehicles to the test in an attractive racing atmosphere for the past two years.
Defending champion successful
Three-time DTM champion Klaus Ludwig and his companion Jörg Hatscher were able to claim overall victory, repeating their success from Zandvoort. In their Mercedes Benz C-Class ITC (490 hp), they claimed their third victory of the season.
Thorsten Stadler (Mercedes Benz C-Class), who finished second overall, also successfully defended his title and secured the TWC title early.
A BMW M3 also on the podium
Third place went to a BMW M3, with Stephan Piepenbrink in the cockpit. This is already his second podium finish. Over the course of forty minutes, the man from Munich had pulled out a clear lead over his fellow drivers. It had looked different in the first few laps, when Armin Dellkamm (BMW M3 DTM) and Michael Schneider (Ford Sierra RS500) were closing in on him. But things turned out differently, Dellmann's M3 suffered a defect early on and retired.
Class winner
Volker Schneider, Michael Schneider's father, took over the wheel of the Ford after the mandatory pit stop and ultimately claimed victory in Class 3 (DTM Group A).
As we all know, history repeats itself, and this event was reminiscent of 1987, when a Ford Sierra RS driven by Armin Hahne also won the race at the Salzburgring.
Other class winners were:
- Jörg Hatscher and Klaus Ludwig in Class 1 (DTM/IT)
- Stephan Piepenbrink in Class 2 (DTM Group H)
- And Ferdie Weischenberg in Class 5 (Group N)
The next round and the championship finale will take place from October 12-14, 2018 at the legendary Hockenheimring.
