With more than 24 races and regularity tests, the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix transported almost 51,000 spectators into the history of motorsport at the Nürburgring on the weekend of August 10-12, 2018. On and off the traditional circuit, 15 top-class starting fields were on display, featuring a reunion with legendary vehicles. The entire spectrum of circuit motorsport was on offer: Lovers of racing cars from the sixties, enthusiasts of touring cars or sports prototypes were able to enjoy several groups at once and even those interested in modern motorsport got their action either in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany or in the Masters Endurance Legends, where well-known racing cars from the recent history of Le Mans gave their best.
Skoda with parade as guest of honor
On the second weekend in August, Skoda presented an interesting selection of vehicles from its 117-year history, including a number of well-known racing and rally cars, often from private ownership. A special guest was certainly the Formula 3 racer, one of which was driven in 1968 by the Czech Miroslav Fousek, who won the Eastern European Formula 3 Championship.
But the rare Group 5 Skoda 200 RS also attracted a lot of attention. Just two original examples still exist today. The prototype is considered the forerunner of the successful 130 RS.
An illustrious guest was found behind the wheel of a Skoda 110 R: Lili Reisenbichler, internationally successful racing legend of the seventies and eighties, is now an ambassador for the KinderHerz foundation.
Another gem from the factory museum was the flat roadster 1100 OHC, which was not only visually impressive. The speed it achieved with its 92 hp and 550 kg probably impressed every spectator.
In addition to all these motor sports cars, there were a number of road-going Skodas to admire, which also did their laps on the GP track, but were of course lapped several times by the fast competition.
Photos of all the Skoda vehicles present can be found in the specially created Skoda picture gallery.
Touring cars with many old acquaintances
The number of spectators in the grandstands clearly showed which races were particularly popular. The races for the Touring Car Classics and the Revival German Racing Championship were certainly among the favorites.
The touring cars from the DTM, ITC, STW and related European series provided plenty of excitement. There was a reunion with racing legends such as the Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI, the BMW M3 E30 and the Mercedes-Benz 190 Evo II, in which the stars of yesteryear often took their seats. Leopold Prince of Bavaria, Harald Grohs and Christian Menzel, for example, rolled up to the start in the DTM BMW M3.
AvD Sport President Volker Strycek, who clinched the first championship title in DTM history in 1984, competed in an Opel Astra from the STW.
He also gained direct impressions of the action in the endurance cockpit when he competed in the two-seater racing cars and GTs up to 1961. "It's simply fascinating to drive such cars," said Strycek, describing the feeling that he certainly shared with many AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix participants. "Others would be happy to have such a model in their garage and we even race it. It has a very special charm. A car like the Triumph TR4, which I share here with Bernhard Wagner, is totally purist - it's incredibly demanding as a driver. The brakes are almost weak compared to modern racing cars, the handling is completely different and the steering forces are much higher. Driving such cars at the limit is incredibly demanding. But it's also a lot of fun to drive."
At the DRM Revival, the Zakspeed-Ford Capri (formerly driven by Klaus Ludwig) entered by the Berlin Mücke team was the main target of the photo and video cameras. The latter took an unrivaled double victory.
However, the fans' index fingers were raised in the air precisely when the flame-throwing BMW M1 or Urs Beck's Porsche 935 entered the bend...
Exciting duel in the Formula Junior
The FIA Lurani Trophy races are fascinating simply because there are so many cars on the track at the same time. It creates a real race feeling! Friday's qualifying session was all about speed, with the fast Scotsman Mark Shaw setting an impressive lap time of 2:01.543 and securing pole position.
As expected, the first race was tough (but fair). Mark Shaw, Pierre Tonetti and the Swiss driver Bruno Weibel fought a varied three-way battle at the front. Despite technical difficulties, Bruno Weibel was lucky enough to finish second behind Mark Shaw. After the race, Weibel said: "Unfortunately, the shift fork of 4th and 5th gear on my gearbox broke slightly, so that I could no longer shift 4th gear and had to shift directly from 3rd to 5th and back again. With this handicap, you can no longer fight for victory. Fortunately, the shift fork didn't break completely and I was able to secure second place. Pierre Tonetti had an engine failure shortly after my problem and spun out at the Dunlop hairpin."
Weibel's Lotus 22 could be repaired for Sunday, however, and so it was possible to watch a thrilling duel between him and Mark Shaw over the entire race distance. Several lead changes made the race exciting right to the end. Mark Shaw ultimately had a little more speed and crossed the finish line with a lead of two tenths of a second!
Speed comparison
As a spectator, you are often impressed by the speeds and the duels on show, regardless of the value of the vehicle. Anyone who has ever wondered how the different groups compare might be interested in the following table with comparisons of lap times:
- Formula 1 Williams FW07/C : 1:36.476
- Masters Endurance Legends, Lola Aston Martin DBR : 1:37.652
- DRM, Ford Capri Zakspeed: 1:47.010
- FIA Lurani, Lotus 22 : 2.01.982
- Gentlemen Drivers, Shelby Cobra 2:02.956
- Maserati Tipo 63: 2:03.628
- Lola T70 Mk III B, 1:48.391
Evening race as the highlight
As the sun almost touched the treetops on the horizon, the highlight of the Oldtimer Grand Prix for many visitors, the evening race of the two-seater racing cars and GTs up to 1961, started. Porsche 904, Gullwing Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, Maserati Tipo 63, Aston Martin and Austin Healey were the well-known big names in the field, but exotics such as an Alta Streamliner from 1948 made the field even more interesting.
With perfect weather and a picturesque sunset, this race of almost 50 sports cars was certainly the atmospheric highlight of the weekend.
Historic meets modern racing fields
Numerous innovations offered even more racing and even more festival flair at the Nürburgring this year. Two rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany, for example, set the tone for modern motorsport. In addition to the live broadcast of the Cup on Sport1, ten of the 26 historic races were also broadcast live on the internet.
Gigantic offer next to the track
A number of well-known companies again used the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix as a platform in 2018 and complemented the festival flair with impressive exhibitions. In the Jaguar Village, visitors were able to discover not only historic models but also the electrically powered one-make cup touring car of the future. Former Formula 1 star Christian Danner was in great demand as a guest speaker and autograph signer.
The Mercedes-Benz Arena was dominated by Porsche Classic. To mark the brand's 70th birthday, the Zuffenhausen-based company had come up with something very special and had two-time sports car world champion and multiple Le Mans winner Derek Bell compete in the Gentlemen Drivers' race in an early Porsche 911 in the "Project 70" design.
In addition to Derek Bell, another guest of honor was also on site, this time from the British Isles: Clive Chapman, son of Lotus founder Colin Chapman and head of the historic Lotus racing team, visited the Lotus exhibition in the tent of the trade magazine Motor Klassik. It was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the British racing and sports car manufacturer and showcased a number of outstanding historic vehicles.
