"Ford makes you mobile" - this was the slogan the company used to accompany its newly launched C 100 sports car project in the 1982 one-make world championship. But instead of the hoped-for victories over Porsche and Lancia, the "White Giant" became a long-term problem child. The Ford works drivers gave the car a very poor report card due to the extreme vibrations. Twelve years later, the Ford Mondeo did not fare much better - the Cologne racing touring car failed miserably and almost always lagged behind. At some point during 1980, Ford executives at the company's European headquarters in England had a good idea. After the highly successful GT 40 era 15 years earlier, the gentlemen thought that Ford should once again compete with the big names in the sports car industry. And, of course, at the highest level in the one-make world championship for sports prototypes. It was also fitting that the world governing body, the FIA, decreed new Group C regulations for 1982 with sufficient lead time and that the other competitors also had to start from scratch.
