Before the modern racing cars were let off the leash at 4 p.m. on Saturday and not caught again until the same time on Sunday, the drivers of the ADAC Youngtimer Trophy started the 24h Classic Nürburgring at 9 a.m. on May 20. Despite the name, the race for historic vehicles naturally did not last 24 hours, as otherwise it would have got in the way of the main event in the afternoon. But even though it only lasted three hours, the classic field in the "Green Hell" provided good entertainment for the motorsport fans who arrived early.
Because the historic material is not spared at the Youngtimer Trophy and drove the normal NLS course in the Eifel preliminary program, i.e. a 25-kilometre lap over the GP circuit and Nordschleife. After just 15 minutes, Thomas Fröhlingsdorf's Ford Escort showed just how much of a strain the Eifel circuit puts on the racing cars. The green dog bone blew its engine on the second lap of the race at Quiddelbacher Höhe, whereupon it slipped with the rear wheels on its own oil track, flipped and - after the wide slicks suddenly regained grip - rolled over heavily at the airfield. Thankfully, the driver was uninjured.
Tobias Hoischen's VW Scirocco was also worn down by the Nordschleife. A good 50 minutes before the end, the coupé lost a front wheel at Brünnchen and hit the crash barrier. This also resulted in material damage.
Mercedes in the Porsche sandwich
Porsche and BMW dominated the starting field and the first ten overall positions, nine of which went to one of the two aforementioned manufacturers. Only one Mercedes-Benz was able to get between the top dogs, even leaving most of them behind: Ralf Schall drove his 190 E 2.5-16 to second place and was only beaten by Björn and Georg Griesemann, who completed 18 laps in 3:05:21.635 hours and took a commanding win in their Porsche 911 RSR. The podium was completed by another Porsche 911 RSR: the former IMSA race car of Oliver Boyke and Ruben Zeltner, which finished just 36 seconds behind Ralf Schall after a furious race to catch up.
