The 1956 Mille Miglia, one of the most dangerous road races ever, ended with six fatalities and a five-way Ferrari victory. Castellotti won in a Ferrari 290 MM, while fourth place went to Juan-Manuel Fangio in the same model. The latter vehicle will be offered at an auction in New York at the end of 2015 and is expected to set a new price record. In the mid-fifties (after the withdrawal of Mercedes-Benz), there were only two companies that set the tone in sports car racing, Ferrari and Maserati. There was a fierce arms race between the two factory teams, which were only a few kilometers apart, which resulted in such legendary cars as the Maserati 450 S or the Ferrari 290 MM. These cars often only raced for one season, as the example of the Ferrari 290 MM documented here shows. In 1953 and 1954, Ferrari had been able to win the World Sports Car Championship, which had a high status from the outset. In 1955, however, Mercedes-Benz dominated, winning three out of six races and becoming champion.
