From June 20-22, the 19th "Vernasca Silver Flag" was held in the Italian province of Piacenza on the former hill climb route from Castell' Arquato to Vernasca. The event is based on an exciting tradition, as real hill climb races were held on the same route between 1953 and 1972.
For several years now, a classic car event has been taking place that shines with top-class vehicles and a fantastic atmosphere. Three runs (without timekeeping) were completed over two days in very hot temperatures.
Also popular with foreigners
A glance at the start list shows that the event is also very popular with Swiss, Germans and Austrians. Of the 220 vehicles listed, almost 40 came from Switzerland, another dozen from Germany and a handful from Austria, in addition to entries from France, the Netherlands and a large contingent from England.
Under the sign of Lancia
This year's "Vernasca Silver Flag" was all about Lancia. Under the motto: "Lancia, dalla Lambda alla LC2", 58 cars from the traditional Italian brand took to the track.
In addition to many Fulvia, Aurelia and Delta, seven Stratos and several 037s created a rally atmosphere.
A touch of Targa Florio
You're in Italy and nothing is rushed. So the start of the first race was not until 11.00 a.m. on Saturday.
The starting point is the beautiful, historic town of Castell' Arquato. The cars were sent out onto the track at 30-second intervals. The first four kilometers are flat and without any bends worth mentioning. The surface has seen better days and some treacherous bumps require full concentration.
The fastest cars are likely to have reached over 200 km/h on this section of the route. This is despite a few chicanes and the aforementioned bumps.
At the entrance to the village of Lugagnano, a traffic circle slowed the drivers down before they thundered on towards the village exit after a spectacular 90-degree left-hand bend in the center. All very close to spectators, who were able to follow the action up close in a garden restaurant and on the roadside.
There was a hint of Targa Florio in the air! After another traffic circle, the road winds its way up to Vernasca in countless bends over the next four kilometers. There are 300 meters of altitude to overcome.
In addition to passing through the village of Lugagnano, this section is certainly the heart of the 8.5 km route.
Later in the afternoon, the riders were able to line up for the second run, followed by the third run on Sunday.
Prominent riders at the start
Two very well-known former racing drivers competed in the 19th "Vernasca Silver Flag". The first was Henri Pescarolo, a four-time Le Mans winner. With 33 starts, he is the absolute record holder at Le Mans and it is impossible to imagine the Sarthe without him. In addition to his endurance races, he also competed in several Formula 1 races and ran his own racing team, Pescarolo Sport. At the Silver Flag 2014, he competed in a magnificent Matra MS11 12-cylinder monoposto.
Sandro Munari, who won the Monte Carlo Rally four times between 1972 and 1977, is hardly less legendary. In Vernasca, Munari of course drove a Lancia Stratos.
Highly interesting field of vehicles
The audience was really offered a lot. In addition to the broad Lancia field, some rare Alfa Romeo sports cars also competed, including an Alfa Romeo 2000 Sportiva from 1954 and the famous Giulia TZ in the TZ1 and TZ2 variants.
There were also beautiful English cars to admire and of course the Italian exotics from Ermini, Osca and Abarth. 220 vehicles, a great variety, the spectators were certainly not bored, especially when the sporty racing cars on three wheels drifted around the bend in Lugagnano.
Culinary feel-good program
Italy is not only associated with sporty cars, but of course also with good food. The stomach is especially rewarded at the Bergennen Vernasca Silver Flag.
By paying the entry fee (Euro 500), drivers and their companions secured themselves a culinary feel-good program with two lunches, a wine tasting and, as a highlight, the grand gala dinner on Saturday evening in the castle courtyard of Castell' Arquato.
In a dignified setting, there was ample opportunity to talk petrol and make new contacts.
Anyone who missed the 19th "Vernasca Silver Flag" should find out about the 20th edition in good time. A long weekend in Emilia Romagna is worthwhile for classic car fans and culinary connoisseurs.
