The 2014 edition of the historic Grand Prix Montreux took place from September 4-7 . It celebrated its 80th anniversary since it was first held on June 3, 1934, in perfect weather conditions. The 30,000 spectators, many of whom came by train thanks to the cooperation of the SBB, enjoyed an interesting program and many beautiful cars.
Under the sign of the great automobile nation Italy
For several days, Montreux was dominated by the great automobile nation of Italy and its famous brands. The Alfa Romeo factory museum, the Museo Storico, and Gérald Bugnon with his private collection brought exceptional vehicles to Lake Geneva that were certainly worth seeing. On display were an Alfa Romeo TI 8C from 1932, an Alfetta Tipo 159 and an 8C 2300 Tipo Le Mans 1931. Geneva collector Marc Caveng also brought along the ex-Bruno Giacomelli Alfa Romeo 179 Formula 1 car from 1980.
The audience was thrilled, but there were many other vehicles worth seeing, such as a whole phalanx of Bugatti, various Lotus sports and racing cars, Cooper, Brabham and March monoposti and many other rarities. Two brand new Ferrari LaFerrari cars were a particular attraction for the younger spectators.
Celebrities for the 80th anniversary
Montreux Grand Prix OC President Ezio Vialmin was overjoyed: "We never thought that so many spectators would make the pilgrimage to Montreux. This is a great reward for us. The cars we showed were certainly exceptional for an event in Switzerland."
At certain moments, you really could have thought you were in Monaco instead of on the Vaud Riviera.
The number of prominent guests from motor racing this year was impressive; in addition to former F1 racing drivers René Arnoux and Erik Comas, world rally runner-up Guy Fréquelin and nine-time world rally champion Sébastien Loeb, who thrilled the audience with incredible drifts in a works Citroën DS3 WRC, were also present at the 2014 Montreux GP.
The Grand Prix Montreux 1977
You have to look way back to the 1977 Montreux Grand Prix to find similarly prestigious names and so many racing celebrities. Surprisingly, it was precisely this 1977 event that was forgotten in the official 2014 program. In fact, the 1977 Montreux GP attracted racing greats such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Hermann Lang, Stirling Moss, Clay Regazzoni, Toulo de Graffenried, Maurice Trintignant, Amédée Gordini and Philippe Etancelin.
Etancelin, winner of the 1934 24 Hours of Le Mans with an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 and co-driver Luigi Chinetti, finished second in the 1934 Montreux Grand Prix. At the wheel of his Maserati 8 CM, he was only beaten by Count Carlo Felice Trossi in an Alfa Romeo Tipo B/P3.
A success despite errors in the program
Strangely enough, the program of the 2014 GP Montreux stated that Philippe Etancelin, affectionately known as "Phi-Phi" by his friends, had taken part in the 1984 GP Montreux. However, this would have been impossible, as he died on October 13, 1981.
This small lapse and the fact that the 1977 Grand Prix was forgotten did not, of course, stand in the way of the great success of the 2014 Montreux Grand Prix. The multifaceted event not only delighted the audience, but above all the participants.
The organizing committee of the Grand Prix Montreux can only be congratulated for what they have put together this year with a tourist rally (Montreux-Gruyères-Jaunpass-Saanen-Col des Mosses-Barrage de l'Hongrin-Château de Chillon-Montreux) on Thursday, the hill climb to Caux on Saturday and the Grand Prix on Sunday in the streets of Montreux.
