Gerhard Berger laughs and says: "Niki only has one ear, Helmut only has one eye and I only have one usable arm at the moment. That's how it looks with our legends."
But as soon as the old men see their racing cars again, they very quickly turn into young lads. The fighting spirit is awakened at the drop of a hat and they start checking their opponents' equipment.
The material makes the difference, or does it?
Patrick Friesacher is optimistic: "In 2005, the Minardi was probably the weakest car in the field, but today I might even be able to win."
Dr. Helmut Marko shouts from the BRM: "Stop, stop, electric blankets are not allowed." Christian Klien's Red Bull is indeed waiting for the start with electric blankets on all four wheels. Marko doesn't give up, calls the Red Bull mechanic over and demands that the blankets be removed immediately. Everyone laughs.
Karl Wendlinger in the Sauber C14 says: "I only have 3rd gear available anyway, so even heating blankets wouldn't help."
The Red Bull bursts into flames at the start attempt, Berger's turbo Ferrari comes to a standstill with an oil leak. Fortunately, there are still replacement cars. Jochen Rindt's Lotus 49 is hastily prepared for Gerhard. After the first seat test, however, he is stuck in the car. Only with double help can he be pulled out of Jochen's cockpit due to his damaged right arm.
Let's go
Dieter Quester can hardly wait for the start and is already highly concentrated in the Surtees.
Meanwhile, the Lotus 49 is already struggling with its own heat and everyone is waiting for the end of the driver parade of today's F1 drivers to finally be let loose. Niki Lauda is happy about the shady presence of his former Ferrari mechanic.
Finally the time has come, the gate opens and Quester pushes towards the race track with the Surtees. Lauda makes his way through the numerous fans with the breathtaking sound of the Boxer 12-cylinder engine.
Everyone in the stands waves their flags, creating the red-white-red national flag from a distance. Despite the still loud, old engines, the fans cannot be overheard. The emotions in the stands and in the pit lane have reached their peak. Some have chicken skin, others have tears in their eyes. Everyone is shouting the name of their idol, whether Niki, Gerhard or Didi.......
Thank you Didi
T-shirts with the inscription "Thank you Didi" are a hit at the Ring. Everyone is overjoyed to have Formula 1 back in Styria and then this parade of legends: all nine surviving Austrian F1 drivers take to the track with their cars in glorious sunshine. Nobody stays glued to their seat, it's an absolute blast. It doesn't matter at all if one car or another doesn't get very far or only rattles along slowly and with misfires.
Everyone deserves the cheers of the 100,000 spectators. When the trio of Lauda, Berger and Wurz line up together on the start-finish line next to Marko's BRM, who has been trying desperately to climb out of the car for around five minutes, to report for an interview, the main grandstand literally glows.
Niki Lauda knows very well that a sport can only survive thanks to its fans, so he doesn't miss the opportunity to greet and personally address the numerous fans who have turned up. As he takes a deep bow in front of the entire grandstand, the fan community expresses its gratitude. The flags on all the stands give the track a red-white-red passe-partout.
For many, this demonstration was the highlight of the day. It was a pleasant side effect that only an hour later a real F1 GP took place as part of the supporting program.
The Spielberg race track in green Styria is one of the most beautiful in the world. It usually produces very good races with often surprising results. Jo Siffert in a BRM won here in 1971, Vittorio Brambilla in a March in 1975 and John Watson in a Penske in 1976.
It's great that this race is back: Thank you Didi!
