It was actually expected that the "Older Classics" classic car meeting on June 9, 2024 would be overrun, as two "competing events", namely the Oldtimer Sunday Morning Meeting and the Albisgütli Cars & Bikes, were canceled this summer. However, the uncertain weather apparently deterred many potential participants from visiting Kemptthal on the second weekend in June. And this despite the fact that it actually remained dry at Motorworld between Zurich and Winterthur.
In any case, the number of vehicles arriving was well below the number that had come to the first Older Classics of the year a month earlier.
However, there were also some interesting vehicles to marvel at on June 9, 2024, but there were hardly any million-dollar vehicles, apart from the 300 SL in the Merbag tent.
Great bread-and-butter cars
The selection of former "bread-and-butter" cars was particularly extensive.
Of course, the VW Beetle was omnipresent, but you could also see a Saab 95 station wagon, a Volvo 240 station wagon, a Citroën 2CV, a Fiat Topolino and many more.
You don't see a VW Fridolin, an early VW Scirocco, a two-door Opel Rekord C, a Citroën GSA or a Ford Mustang II every day either.
British exotics
Two fifties limousines from British production caught the eye.
There was once a majestic Armstrong Siddeley Star Sapphire from 1959, in which a Geneva entrepreneur was probably chauffeured six decades ago. Today, there are only a dozen or so Armstrong Siddeleys left on Swiss roads.
The MG Magnette ZB, which left the factory in the mid-fifties, also belonged to the upper class. Only a few of these cars survived.
Special French cars
The Amilcar Pégase from 1936, which stood in Kemptthal as a convertible, is probably even rarer in this country than the two British cars.
Equipped with a four-cylinder engine, it was one of the last models built by the traditional French manufacturer before Hotchkiss took over the company.
Here, too, the beautiful radiator grille was appealing, just like on the Armstrong Siddeley.
Many Americans
The selection of Americans at the June Older Classics was extensive.
From the Ford Model T to the Model A and models from the fifties and sixties, there was a lot to see that you could only dream of back then.
One example is the Mercury Cougar, which with its headlights that disappear behind flaps is still considered an attractive appearance today.
Of course, there were also some Porsches and Alfa Romeos, a Lancia Flaminia was also spotted, an NSU Ro80 represented the Wankel community, a Nissan 300 ZX and a Toyota Celica the hot nineties Japanese and fast BMWs also made an impression.
Despite the reduced number of vehicles, there was plenty to see and discuss. And thanks to the extensive culinary offerings and many food stands, nobody had to go hungry or thirsty.
P.S. A good overview of the wide range of vehicles at the second Older Classics of 2024 can of course be found in the picture gallery.
