If it weren't for the occasional snatches of clearly Swiss Mittelland dialects, you would have thought you were in the United States.
Rock music, petticoats, Elvis hairstyles and, above all, American cars (and motorcycles) of all stripes were on display at "American Live 2011", the US car meeting in Oensingen, in the middle of the Basel-Bern-Zurich triangle.
And there were plenty of them, not only from Switzerland, but also from Germany, Austria and Italy! Over 2,000 cars were expected, and the organizers counted around 2,500. The organizers were lucky with the weather, the organization went like clockwork and the traffic concept worked.
From Buick to DeSoto, Chevrolet to Pontiac
Where else can you see so many Pontiac, Chrysler, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Ford, Buick or DeSoto in one place? If you wanted to get an overview of the first Chevrolet Corvette model series, for example, American Live was the place to be. Sting Ray followed Sting Ray, one more beautiful than the other. Ford Mustang fans were also well catered for, with everything from the early models to the modern era on display. Even the pre-war veteran American La France was there, and the custom cars were not missing either.
There were also rare exotics such as a Packard 8 or a Cheetah to be discovered among the volume makes and models.
And if you were patient enough, you could also grab something to eat and drink and watch the classic cars pass by. Or pass the time shopping.
Symphonies of sound
And then the sound of these large-volume V8 engines, always wonderful. The 25,000 visitors and spectators paid tribute to the large-volume engines and fell silent every time the roar of a powerful engine was heard.
For some, the pre-war classics may have been a little too short and one or two vehicles from the sixties and seventies may have been missing. Fans of originality will have turned up their noses at certain "improvements" to classic American sports cars, but as we all know, there's no accounting for taste.
In any case, every American fan is sure to have found what they were looking for, as you can see from our gallery.
