Summary
The Volvo P 1800 S was built from 1961 to 1973 and can be considered a success overall. It was more Gran Turismo than sports car, but it helped to raise Volvo's image. With its appearance in the television series Simon Templar (The Saint), the car became widely known.

Preview (beginning of the article)
Simon Templar was the hero of a popular television series in the 1960s. The often unconventional serial detective, who was also called "the Saint" because of his initials "S.T." and thus gave the English version of the series its name, was played by the actor Roger Moore and the television makers chose the Volvo P 1800 as the emergency vehicle. Volvo supplied five vehicles and publicized the compact sports car far beyond Sweden and England. Roger Moore was so enthusiastic about the Volvo that he also used it privately. And for Volvo, the appearance in the TV series was good advertising. The story of the Volvo P 1800 began back in 1956, when Helmer Petterson suggested to Volvo boss Gunnar Engellau that he build a "sensible" sports car. Just one year later, several designs were submitted and a proposal from Frua won the race.
