Although it could not score against its rivals in many categories, it offered the indestructibility of a Toyota and a lavish standard equipment package. The fourth-generation Camry was to mark Toyota's arrival in the upper mid-size class. It declared war on the top dogs Mercedes E-Class and BMW Five, but also on the Alfa Romeo 164 and the Opel Omega. Although it was not quite able to win the battle, it created a solid alternative to the usual players in its class. And for those who didn't care much about brand names, the Camry was a car that was comfortable and reliable. Toyota itself saw it that way: "If you don't want to meet the expectations of others, but only your own, you're ready for a Camry", reads an advertisement on page 121 of issue no. 6 of auto motor und sport from 1997.
