In 1956, Hobby drove the Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing in a double test of almost 3000 km across Germany, Austria and northern Italy. The two authors Sponsel and Dettmer were impressed and enthusiastic, but also recognized the limitations of a narrow sports car geared towards racing.

A report in a Stuttgart daily newspaper (after Easter 1956): ... There were a few unteachable people who couldn't let it go this time either. KNITZ recalls with displeasure a heavy German sports car that raced up the Neue Weinsteige at race-like speed, passing the queue of cars on the left, of course, and constantly "cutting" the other vehicles in the most dangerous way when turning in. ... I had no idea of this report, which was published in a Stuttgart daily newspaper on the Tuesday after Easter, when I made my way through the Stuttgart traffic flow towards the autobahn late in the afternoon on Maundy Thursday with great care and caution. After all, under the hood was an engine with 200 hp, and the car had earned a reputation as the fastest production sports car in the world in recent years. Even the most hardened driver will hear his heart pounding louder than usual in the first thirty minutes at the wheel of such a vehicle.
