The Mille Miglia is a legend, even as a classic car event. Its appeal and attraction for fans and car owners is unbroken. For many classic car owners, taking part in the Mille Miglia is one of the ten things you absolutely have to do in your life.
415 teams - one goal
31 Alfa Romeo, 20 Aston Martin, 16 BMW 328, 16 Bugatti (eight of them Bugatti 35 alone), 24 Ferrari, 41 Fiat, 25 Jaguar, 26 Lancia, 13 Maserati, 34 Mercedes-Benz (24 of them 300 SL), 24 Porsche, 11 Triumph and many others got ready in Brescia, 415 teams in total took up the challenge of covering 1600 kilometers (or 1000 miles) in around two days.
Around a third were in pre-war vehicles, while the rest competed in sports cars from 1947 onwards and, unlike the majority of classic car rallies, ended up playing second fiddle.
The condition for participation in 2013 was once again that the vehicle entered had to be one of the racing cars that had started or been registered in at least one of the historic Mille Miglia races between 1927 and 1957.
Not only did the cars entered represent the best of the best, the list of participants also sounded a bit like a "Who's Who" of the automotive and racing industry. Coulthard, Wendlinger, Mass, Stuck, etc., they were all there.
Field of vehicles in a class of its own
In 2013, the Mille Miglia once again lived up to its reputation for having the best and most beautiful vehicles at the start. The salt in the soup are the exotic vehicles in particular, which are rarely seen at other classic car events, for example the O.M. racing cars.
But there were also rarities on display that one would not expect to see in Italy, e.g. the Allard J2 or the Bristol 400 Farina, the Goliath GP 700, a Panhard X87, a Veritas Dyna or a Saab 93 Deluxe, to name just a few examples.
However, the smaller and lesser-known Italian sports cars, such as the Bandini 1100 S, the Dagrada 750 Sport Barchetta, a trio of Erminis, a Moretti 750 Sport Bialbero or the Pagani Lancia PS 147 Sport, also caused a storm of enthusiasm.
The typical Mille rain
The capricious weather in northern Italy made umbrella manufacturers and the sellers of protective clothing rejoice. The vehicle presentation in Brescia turned into a cold and wet affair. In addition to the rain, there were strong gusts of wind from all directions, causing umbrellas to bend like matchsticks and soon they were only worth their weight in scrap metal.

Due to the extreme weather, at least some of the usual crowds of visitors stayed away from the Piazza di Loggia. But even such inhospitable weather conditions could keep the hard core of the fan community from watching the preparations for the start, at least when they weren't warming up in one of the crowded bars.
Meanwhile, the cars were packed up and ready to go, sometimes looking like inflated airships. Then they were hastily unpacked again and driven to the piazza to be presented. As soon as this part was completed, the participants streamed into the next dry room to warm up.
Start in the dry
Later in the afternoon, the rain eased, temperatures rose and even the sun occasionally peeked through a hole in the cloud cover.
As tradition dictates, the race started punctually at 18:45. Many spectators lined the route through Brescia's old town, euphorically cheering on every participant. The individual start procedure took around 2.5 hours, then the entire Mille Miglia entourage was on its way.
Magical moments at night
From Brescia, the route ran via Verona, Vicenza and Montecchio Maggiore to Ferrari, where the participants were expected around six hours later to rest and eat.
Passing through the cities at night was once again one of the best moments of the Mille Miglia in 2013.
The route had to be partially adjusted due to flooding and technical problems had already forced the first participants to retire.
Highlight Assisi
As in previous years, passing through Assisi, an ancient town in central Italy, was a highlight. Until San Marino, the route had been somewhat disappointing, as the route mainly passed through industrial areas. But then the scenery changed and beautiful landscapes and attractive mountain roads followed.
After around 14 hours of driving, we were scheduled to arrive in Rome at the Colosseum, but the delays led to considerable delays. It was impressive in any case.
Finish in the rain
On Saturday, the longest stage took the participants back from Rome to Brescia. Around 16 hours were planned for this, tough hours.
Highlights were the passage through Florence and of course the infamous Futa Pass, where large crowds of fans waited for the vehicles to pass.
The remaining 340 teams then reached the finish line in the rain, which meant that fewer people were sitting in the grandstands, with the VIPs preferring the warmth of the coffee bars to waiting outside. Nevertheless, the hard core of fans cheered on the newcomers and the weather could not dampen their enthusiasm.
And the drivers and their co-drivers were also happy when they crossed the finish ramp. They had endured many arduous traffic jams, persevered in the rain and showed a lot of courage, because driving in the dark, especially in the rain, with these old cars is extremely demanding.
Winner from Argentina
The winners were Argentinians Juan Tonconogy and Giullermo Franci Berisso in a Bugatti T 40 from 1927, who took the lead early on. The first thirteen places were occupied exclusively by pre-war vehicles; the post-war sports cars, which were actually superior in terms of numbers, were unable to assert themselves. This also makes the Mille a special rally.
340 of the 415 teams were classified, 75 vehicles had to retire, which is actually a surprisingly low retirement rate. This is not least thanks to the strong performance of the works teams from BMW, Volkswagen, Jaguar and others, who left no stone unturned to bring their vehicles to the finish.
