Summary
When Porsche presented the completely renewed Porsche 911, internally known as the 996, at the IAA in 1997, it came as a shock to many tradition-conscious Porsche drivers. The design and technology represented a clear departure from the past. But the new sports car proved its worth and became the best-selling 911. One of the first models went to tennis player Martina Hingis, who won the car at the WTA Touring in Stuttgart/Filderstadt. This vehicle report describes the early 996 and shows it and its evolutionary forms in many pictures.

The days of air cooling were over, noise limits could only be achieved with a water jacket, and a new development was needed to meet the required exhaust emission limits. The result was a completely new engine, although the six-cylinder boxer arrangement and the rear engine principle were retained.
