Anyone who thinks that there are already hundreds of Porsche books may well be right. However, Jürgen Gassebner's work does not tell the story of a model or the brand, but is rather a non-fiction and specialist book for restorers and craftsmen.
Thematically grouped
The author begins with a prologue that ranges from the 911 to the Carrera GT. This is followed by an interesting section on the Porsche Museum, in which various personalities from the museum management also have their say. The subsequent disciplines of vehicle restoration are divided into chapters so that the reader can delve deeper into the area that interests them.
What you need to know before you buy
Before Gassebner goes into the actual restoration, he explains what is important when assessing the condition of a restoration object. A helpful chapter for anyone who is about to make a purchase decision.
Explained in detail
Then it's time to get down to business: the author first deals with the restoration of the body and chassis, before moving on to the engine and gearbox.
Jürgen Gassebner knows how to explain the various techniques in an understandable way and does not omit either the advantages or disadvantages of individual procedures. Many work steps are not only described in an informative and easy-to-understand manner, but are also generously illustrated. The pleasure of reading is complemented by full or double-page, high-quality photos of vehicles.
There's more to it than the technology
To ensure that sufficient attention is also paid to the interior of the classic car, the author explains on 17 pages what to look out for when restoring the interior.
Finally, Gassebner also points out how important a meticulously kept service booklet and, last but not least, detailed documentation of the restoration are for preserving the value of the vehicle.
Experience from specialists
Some of the people involved in restoration projects also have their say, such as Hans Metzger, chief designer of the legendary Porsche 917, to whom a portrait is dedicated at the end of the book.
Who will like this book?
This book is suitable for anyone who is toying with the idea of a restoration, is perhaps about to purchase a restoration object or already owns one. However, the book could also be a deterrent for easily discouraged contemporaries, as the author describes just about every surprise you might encounter in the course of a restoration. The book is even worth reading for anyone who is not restoring a vehicle at all, but simply wants to find out everything there is to know about a perfect restoration.
