The Peugeot 404 was extremely comfortable in its class. The simple but elegant lines were also convincing. However, the car came from the factory with a few special features and the 404 was not exactly the height of dynamism either. This (historical) test report shows what was considered good at the time and where there was still room for improvement, illustrated with numerous pictures.

There are essentially three models competing in the 1.7 liter displacement class on the German market: Ford, Opel and Peugeot. All three have the same standard design concept: Four-cylinder engine at the front with blocked transmission, rear-wheel drive via cardan shaft, independent front suspension, rigid rear axle, self-supporting body. Given the basic similarities, it is interesting to find out what other differences there are, such as weight, temperament and dimensions. Finally, it is important to choose the most suitable type for you. This means that there are also many parallels here, many similarities, for example in the basic dimensions or temperament. Three features characterize the Peugeot: the engine revs slightly higher and delivers 65 hp, thus compensating for the slightly higher weight.
