Summary
From 1982 to 1993, Mercedes-Benz built the 190 model of the W201 series. With over 1.8 million units produced, the new compact class was a success. At the top end was the elegant 2.6-liter version, which was fitted with the in-line six-cylinder engine from the larger model series. The superior running culture almost transformed the "Baby Benz" into a luxury saloon. This vehicle report describes the driving impressions and history of the six-cylinder 190 variant and shows it in current and historical pictures.

When Mercedes-Benz introduced the W201 model series, officially known as the 190, in 1982, this marked the entry into a new (lower) vehicle class. The 190/190E came at just the right time, as there was already talk of frosty times in the economy. Aimed at the middle class, the "Baby Benz", as it was called in the United States due to its small size, undercut the top dog Mercedes-Benz 200-280E of the W123 model series by 30 centimetres in length and ten centimetres in width. However, the wheelbase was only shortened by 13 centimetres for the benefit of the interior space and the body was trimmed for optimum aerodynamics, which was very successful with a Cd value of just 0.33. Initial reports spoke of comfortable space and a genuine Mercedes ambience. Bruno Sacco's team had a lucky hand with the design and the little Benz was a hit.
