Summary
In the early 1950s, the MG TD offered sports car fun and dynamics for little money. Those who wanted more power were helped with factory tuning kits. The recipe worked and the TD sold almost 30,000 units, mainly in the USA. Today, the MG TD is a popular classic. This driving report shows an MG TD from 1951 and describes the history of the compact sports car, supplemented by current and historical photographs, four sales brochures and the original owner's manual.

Preview (beginning of the article)
In the 1950s, there were still entry-level sports cars for less than 8,000 francs that offered a lot of driving fun for the money and could be converted into competitive racing cars with additional investment. One of these was the rustic MG TD. As early as 1931, MG began selling a "Midget" with the name "C-Type", followed in 1932 by the Q-Type and in the same year also the J-Type, from which the P-Type and finally from 1936 the TA emerged, which can be seen as the direct forerunner of the later TB, TC, TD and TF Midgets. The TA and TB were sold before the Second World War, while the TC was the first post-war sports car from the Abingdon-based company from 1945.
