Summary
The Lotus Elan is one of those vehicles that every car enthusiast should have driven at least once in their life. This is the only way to understand what a small four-cylinder engine with an automotive lightweight of less than 600 kg can achieve. From 1962 to 1973, the Elan was built as a convertible and later also as a coupé, and it is still one of the most popular British exotics today. Even Emma Peel drove one in the TV series "With umbrella, charm and bowler hat". This driving report attempts to explore the appeal of the Lotus Elan and shows a coupé in many current and historical pictures, as well as in eight (!) sales brochures from back then.

You can ask almost anyone who knows the subject, the Lotus Elan belongs on the list of cars you should have driven once in your life, no matter how short the list really is. Although the little sports car from Norwich only had four cylinders and a plastic body, it is often mentioned in the same breath as the twelve- and eight-cylinder classics from Italy. A Lotus Elan weighs less than 600 kg and with a length of 368 cm, a width of 142 cm and a height of 117 cm, the sports car qualifies as one of the most compact sports cars of all time. Combined with a lustfully breathing four-cylinder engine with over 100 hp, the Elan develops a propulsion that makes many contemporary sports cars look old. It is not the absolute performance figures that are astonishing, but the stupendous agility that makes up the combination of minimal weight with sufficient power.
