Summary
Based on the Lancia Beta Berlina presented in 1972, a whole range of variants was created. The HPE sports estate impressed with its elegance, sportiness and versatility, but the early examples have become very rare. This driving report is about a 1600 version and is based on current and historical images.

The Lancia Beta HPE was not the first sports estate, but it was probably the first to combine a saloon platform with a coupé front end and a redesigned estate rear end. And the recipe was successful! In 1969, the traditional Italian brand Lancia was taken over by Fiat. Initially, the previous model range (with the exception of the Flaminia) continued to be produced, but in the late fall of 1972, almost exactly three years after the takeover, a completely new car called the "Beta" was presented. The world premiere took place at the 1972 Turin Motor Show. "The first Fiat from Lancia", noted Automobil Revue at the launch, indicating that the new hatchback had taken a few cues from the large Turin-based car manufacturer.
