Summary
The Lamborghini Murciélago celebrated its premiere 20 years ago as the successor to the Diablo and for many owners it is regarded as the last true heir to the Miura, Countach and Diablo. The influence of Audi was reflected in the better quality and greater suitability for everyday use, but the Murciélago remained a leisure car for most owners. We wanted to find out more about this and set out to test it ourselves. This driving report is about an early Murciélago from 2003 and shows the mid-engined sports car in current and historical photographs. Don't miss the sound recording.

A Lamborghini with the famous V12 engine is always something special; the Murciélago was the last sports car from Sant'Agata to feature the twelve-cylinder engine in front of the rear axle, which was first installed in a car in the mid-1960s. Awe is the order of the day! The fact that the Lamborghini Murciélago is approached with respect is not only due to its legendary ancestors - Miura, Countach and Diablo - but also to its visual presence, which at 2045 mm wide and 4580 mm long with a height of 1135 mm is simply breathtaking. The Murciélago owes its shape to Belgian designer Luc Donckerwolke, who had previously achieved a bold success with the Audi A2. When Audi took over the reins at Lamborghini in 1998, the successor to the Diablo was actually already largely complete. Of course, the new owner in Ingolstadt was not satisfied with the preliminary work and demanded a complete (visual) overhaul.
