The Englishmen Noel Macklin and Oliver Lyle founded the company "Invicta" in Cobham in 1925 and initially financed it with money from the sugar processor Tate & Lyle PLC. Although the car manufacturer only existed until 1936 (and was briefly revived twice afterwards), the brand is still remembered today for its many racing successes. Invicta did not have the resources to develop an engine itself and therefore sourced it from the manufacturer Meadows. The 2.5 liter in-line six-cylinder engine was enlarged to 3 liters in 1926 and to 4.5 liters in 1928; the S-Type received the last and largest expansion stage.
